PR: 4 | Arthur Ashe Mr. Ashe was a well known and well loved African American tennis player. He was born and raised in Richmond, Virginia and won three Grand Slam titles. He worked hard for social causes all his life, which ended in 1993. He contracted HIV from tainted blood after a heart attack and died leaving a young daughter and wife behind. There was a memoir published shortly after Arthur died. It takes the reader from his childhood in segregated Virginia through to his triumphant tennis career and into his pursuits for civil rights. He was the youngest player to win a main draw match at the U.S. Open, the youngest to reach a Tour semifinal, in 1989 was the youngest French Open/Grand Slam Champion ever. The same year he became the youngest to rank in the Top 5. He won the French Open, and became the first American male to do so since the mid-50s. 1991 was a stellar year for him as he reached the quarterfinals or better in 13 tournaments. He is retired now and attends the Talbot School of Theology. He is also a public speaker to various groups in the name of The Chang Family Foundation. He is a former World No. 1 pro tennis player, winning 8 Grand Slam singles tournaments and an Olympic gold medal in singles. There are only five other male players to have won all four Grand Slam singles events. Due to incessant health issues Agassi retired from pro tennis in 2006, after losing in the third round of the U.S. Open (but winning $4,695,883 in total over his career). He is married to Steffi Graf, has two children, and is the founder of the Andre Agassi Charitable Foundation.
